New Zealand, Part Three:
Queenstown
New
Zealand has developed a reputation as a paradise for the "extreme sports
enthusiast," and it's well-deserved. After all, this is where the bungy jump was
invented! And while I didn't fling myself off any ledges trusting only a rubber
band with a good PR firm to save my life, I did manage to have a lot of fun.
Here,
for instance, are three intrepid adventurers just before their kayaking trip on
the Dart River.
See how happy they look?
See how dry and warm they look?
Think that's a coincidence?
Of
our two river-based experiences, I'd have to put the Shotover River Jet Boats as
the superior. It's a fantastic thrill ride--the boats only need a few inches of
water to operate and are remarkably maneuverable. Gwendolyn and I are in the
lower left of the picture.
Following
the jet boat ride, we took a quick helicopter trip up to the top of a hill
overlooking Queenstown.
That's me giving the universal "I'm glad this activity doesn't involve me
falling in an ice-cold glacial river" sign.
From
the top of the hill, we had amazing views of the town, the lake, and the
mountain range (known as the Remarkables). Thanks to heavy precipitation, the
mountains had more snow on them than any of the locals could remember for this
time of year.
Lest
you think that Queenstown's all about outdoor life, I feel obligated to point
out the nightlife available as well. And while Minus-5 isn't the kind of place
you'd spend a whole evening--what with it being made of ice and all--it was fun
to visit.
